Are you ready for Global Missions Experience 2012?

Prayer Week 2

September 13: Pray that the weather is convenient and provides a safe and useful learning environment.

Psalm 19:1-4

The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.

Urban and Rural Missions to be Incorporated in Harding's Global Missions Experience

News Flash: This press release went out to the local media today, September 12, 2012

More than 750 college students from across the country are expected to attend the 52st annual Global Missions Experience Sept. 27-30 in Floral, Ark., hosted by Harding University.

This will be Harding's ninth time to host Global Missions Experience, formerly known as the World Mission Workshop. The name change reflects a shift in the focus of the conference from a primarily lecture-based format to a hands-on experiential learning opportunity for students to gain practical knowledge that will aid them in the mission fields they may one day encounter.

During the workshop students will have the opportunity to simulate life in Africa, southeastern Asia, Central America, Appalachia, slums of the urban developing world, and refugee camps.

According to Dr. Shawn Daggett, director of Global Missions Experience, this year's workshop will incorporate elements of urban ministry in addition to the rural development techniques offered in the past.

The theme for this year is "Paint My Life for Your Glory."

"We wanted something that focused on God, not us, and we thought about what we can do to glorify him," Daggett said. "Then we realized that we present ourselves as an empty canvas that God can use to communicate his love and mission for the world."

Based on the theme, students will be divided by academic majors to attend classes that center around using their specific major to glorify God. Students will also choose from a variety of stations that allow them to acquire skills needed to evangelize in urban and rural settings. Five keynote speakers who each live on a different continent will address the students at the worship sessions.

Global Missions Experience also serves the dual purpose of sparking interest in mission work and uniting church of Christ sister schools across the nation.

"I chose to be a part of the revival and transformation of Global Missions Experience because it has influenced more people to devote their lives to mission work than anything else we know of," Daggett said. "Also, at a time when unity is somewhat at risk, Global Missions Experience is a real opportunity for students from our sister schools to come together. It is one of the only events that allows students from all our sister universities to interact."

For more information, email gme@harding.edu or call Harding's Center for World Missions at 501-279-5133. To register, visit www.globalmissionsexperience.com. The registration fee is $45 or $30 for Harding students.

Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas with 6,815 students and attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other private university in the state. Harding also maintains campuses in Australia, Chile, England, France, Greece, Italy and Zambia.

Prayer Week 3

September 6: Pray for organization and cooperation between all parties involved.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved themeven as you have loved me."

John 17:20-23

Prayer Week 4

August 30: Pray for those serving in Europe.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3

Excitement is Growing

Registrations from missionaries and students are flowing in rapidly as Harding's student steering committee is working hard to prepare for the arrival of approximately 750 participants in this year's Global Missions Experience at Camp Tahkodah. This year's event will integrate much of the ingredients from the 2010 World Mission Workshop with many of the suggestions made to improve the program. The event is being held three weeks earlier in hopes that we'll all enjoy warmer weather. Our food budget and meal portions will be larger. Half of the learning stations are specifically designed for urban settings. More of the learning stations will be held closer to main meeting place of the event.

Our student public relations committee is working hard to contact people from each Christian university to arrange for a promotional visit within the next couple of weeks. If a couple of Harding students can come to your campus and set up a table in your student center, appear at various events, or make an announcement in chapel, please contact us at once at gme@harding.edu.
